Wedding guest etiquette: how to be the perfect guest

Received a wedding invitation and want to avoid any faux pas? Just follow a few simple etiquette rules and you’ll be a flawless guest.

First, pay attention to how the invitation is addressed to know if the whole family is invited or just a few members. Also, if there’s no additional card with reception details, you’re likely invited to the ceremony only.

You don’t need to RSVP right away, but be sure to respond in good time—couples need accurate headcounts for planning.

When it comes to attire, never wear white—that’s strictly for the bride. Go for pastels or shades of blue. Avoid total black, purple, or fiery red. And leave your sunglasses off during the ceremony.

For men, a dark tailored suit with a white shirt is always a safe and elegant choice.

If there’s no gift registry info, ask the couple or close relatives—it’s best to give something they’ll truly appreciate.

At the ceremony, guests should already be seated before the bride arrives. The front rows are reserved for immediate family: groom’s side on the right, bride’s on the left. Also, be punctual—arriving late is bad form.

Don’t leave the reception before the cake-cutting. And try not to overuse your phone for photos and videos—enjoy the moment instead.
